MCC is proud to partner with UCSI Institute of Music for the 3rd Free Hand Contemporary Composers Piano Festival in September 2023. During the festival, two composers will be commissioned to write a new piano work which will be the set piece for Senior and Young Artist Categories for the UCSI University International Piano Festival & Competition in 2024. Colours and sounds of Malaysia come alive in November
The Malaysian Composers Collective's project "Jalur Kita, Cerita Kita" comes alive at a concert on 26 Nov 2022 at KLPac's Pentas 2 in Kuala Lumpur. Chan Wei Tuck and Jessica Cho win Free Hand 2022 awards
Free Hand 2022 made an exciting return to UCSI University on 25 June, 2022 and nine composers had their works performed by nine members of the UCSI faculty, alumni and students. The evening opened with Ainolnaim Azizol’s Berlabuh , an evocative free-style sonic painting played by Ho Su San to a backdrop of natural sounds recorded by the composer. Beauty in atonality: Jessica Cho's Capricious for Schott's new book launched on Feb 9
On 9 February 2022 German music publisher Schott launched three books on piano pieces by women, which included a commission from composer Jessica Cho for a new piece. For the book, Cho wrote Capricious, a wonderful miniature that in its 2 minute duration encompasses a variety of moods, from calm and serene to sudden leaps of energy. Premiering at MPO all November 2021 - Malaysian chamber works
Premiering all through this month are brand new Malaysian chamber works performed by the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra. The works will be aired on MPO TV, after the initial concert planned for March earlier this year was unable to take place due to the pandemic lockdown. As we approach the close of 2020, we are happy to announce that MPO will be collaborating with MCC in their chamber concert series next year. The first concert is targetted for March 17th for a full Malaysian composers programme by MCC members. The instrumentation is for any mixed ensemble up to 10 players. Minimum is 2 players. Setting the bar for art song studies
This year sees the National Academy of Arts Culture and Heritage (Aswara) setting the bar for Malaysians art song studies by commissioning and publishing a collection of new songs for the voice, based on texts by Malaysians writers. On 28 Feb 2020, Singapore music lovers were treated to a retelling of Adeline Wong’s 2007 piece ‘Empunya Yang beroleh Sita Dewi’ (He who possesses Sita Dewi). First commissioned by the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra at the time for a half-hour performance by the full orchestra with wayang kulit, Empunya Yang beroleh Sita Dewi added yet another modern commentary into the classic Ramayana. MCC launches country's first ever piano anthology
The piano is one of Malaysia's most popular classical instruments, with tens of thousands learning the instrument every year. It is no surprise that piano compositions thus form the bedrock of the country's new music scene. MCC has, since 2015 and earlier, been planning to put some of these scores into an anthology as part of its mission to document the musical landscape of the country and to promote the performance of Malaysian works.
