About MCC

The Malaysian Composers Collective (MCC) is a non-profit organisation aimed primarily at promoting Malaysian contemporary classical music, and is registered under Persatuan Komposer Kolektif (ROS PPM-008-10-02112016).

Mission:
  • Create more opportunities and exposure for local composers
  • Increase awareness and promote Malaysian music at home and abroad
  • Support the creation of Malaysia's new music repertoire
  • Provide a catalyst for composition and new music education
  • Encourage more individuals and groups to organise new music activities

Our Story:

Since its inception in 2008 MCC has chalked many milestones and firsts: it produced Malaysia's first anthology of contemporary composers 'Faith, Hope & Chaos' in collaboration with Off The Edge magazine, organised the country's first young composer's workshop with HSBC Bank in 2007, Malaysia's first new music festival in 2009 with Goethe Institut.

Our projects have been covered by magazines and newspapers such as The Star, The Edge as well as radio station BFM and TV station Astro Awani and NTV7.

In 2009, MCC initiated Malaysia rejoining the regional Asian Composers League (ACL) after a lapse of two decades.

Through ACL we have brought Malaysian new music to the international stage, and presented the country's young composers to take part in the regional young composer's competition for the first time in nearly 20 years.

Over its first decade, MCC's activities have premiered over 50 new Malaysian compositions as well as a number from the Asia Pacific region, and brought out a new generation of young composers who have won awards internationally.

Jessica Cho made Malaysian history by winning 3rd prize at ACL Taiwan 2011, followed by Ainolnaim Azizol, who participated in ACL Singapore in 2013 and again in Tokyo in 2014 where he won 2nd prize. Subsequent competitions have seen seen young composers from across Malaysia, from Selangor's Sayyid Shafiee and Raja Alif to Sabahan Rayner Naili and Penang's Ilysia Tan represent Malaysia.
