Mei Yi Foo takes Free Hand works 'Beyond Borders' in Singapore

Following the success of Malaysian Composers Collective's Free Hand Festival in Kuala Lumpur last August, UK-based Malaysian pianist Mei Yi Foo brings the programme across the Causeway to present a joint programme with Singaporean composers at 'Beyond Borders', happening at Yong Siew Toh Conservetory at National University of Singapore.

Through this first ever joint programme, composers from both sides of the divide explore commonalities and diversities in creative ideas and styles, going past physical, social and historical boundaries at this forum and concert.

Beyond Borders will bring the two cultures together in a unique contemporary piano recital featuring works by YST faculty Chen Zhangyi, Chow Jun Yan, Adeline Wong together with composers from Singapore and Malaysia, in particular winners of Free Hand 2019 Lee Chie Tsang and Samuel Cho.

The event also includes a masterclass and a pre-concert talk where Foo and the composers will illuminate on their work and artistic approach, and offer insight into how the creative process can transcend all barriers tangible and intangible. This meeting of minds hopes to bring greater understanding into how art transcends the limitations life brings.

After the programme, one participant wrote on YST's website, "The dazzling UK-based Malaysian pianist Mei Yi Foo was recently in residence at the Conservatory, showcasing compositions by leading composers from Malaysia and Singapore.

"The performance was accompanied by a forum, where Foo shared her wisdom with our students in a chamber masterclass that proved to be both educational and enlightening."
