CALL FOR SCORES: Jalur Kita Cerita Kita - an MPO-MCC collaboration

The Malaysian Composers Collective (MCC), in collaboration with Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) announces call for scores for the project, Jalur Kita Cerita Kita in conjunction with Malaysia Day 2022.

Malaysian composers are invited to write a new composition based on any chosen aspects relating to one of the Malaysian states provided for in the form.

The selected aspects can consist of a wide range of ideas pertaining to any one of the states such as its folklore, legends, traditional arts and crafts, poetry, songs, dances, visual arts, traditional and contemporary motifs, landscapes, architecture etc as the inspiration for a new work.

A research or study of the chosen state/aspect should be integrated as part of the composition process.

A workshop on the fundamentals of research or study will be provided on a virtual platform to the general public at the early stages of the research and composition process.

The aim of this project is to celebrate the rich heritage and traditions of our country.

Successful composers will receive a commission fee and have their new works performed by the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) on Malaysia Day 16 September 2022.

Eligibility

This Call for Scores is only open to Malaysian composers both local and international.

There is no age limit

Guidelines

There are 2 Phases to the submission

Phase 1

Composers must submit a write-up on their inspiration for this new work based on one of the available states provided in the form below. In this write-up you must include research ideas and how it is used in your creative and composition process. All information on the available states, composers’ details, research ideas, instrumentation must be submitted in the link below by 30 April 2022.

Composers must also upload 1 recent work (both score and recording) composed between 2013 – 2022 as indicated in the link below. All information is provided below

Phase 2

Shortlisted composers from Phase 1 will be notified, and they will proceed to compose the new composition following guidelines below. All full scores must be submitted by 18 July 2022

The results of the selected composers from Phase 2 will be announced by end of July 2022

Instrumentation

Ensemble size: Up to 10 performers in any combination given below. Minimum 2 performers

Traditional instrument is possible, but composers have to arrange their own musician(s) and instrument(s) at their own costs as well as coordinate their own rehearsals prior and during MPO rehearsals

STRINGS

5 violins, 3 violas, 3 cellos, 2 double bass

WOODWINDS

2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons (includes doubling)

BRASS

3 horns, 2 trumpets, 2 trombones (includes bass trombone doubling)

PERCUSSION

1 Percussion
1 Timpani
