Kawasaki, Japan, will host the 37th Asian Composers League (ACL) Conference & Festival from February 3 to 7, 2025, at the Muza Kawasaki Symphony Hall. This prestigious event will showcase works by over 60 composers, including five members of the Malaysian Composers Collective (MCC): Jellal Koay, Zhiyong Tan, Jessica Cho, Wei Chern Ooi, and Adeline Wong. Jellal Koay, a third-year composition student at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, Singapore, will represent MCC in the Young Composers Award Competition with his work limbo for alto saxophone, two tenor saxophones, and baritone saxophone.
The Malaysian works selected for the festival highlight the diversity of contemporary composition, featuring 9 Etudes for Piano by Zhiyong Tan, Frenzied Movements by Jessica Cho, Muses@GPT1 by Wei Chern Ooi, and Crossings by Adeline Wong.
Established in 1973, the Asian Composers League is a key organization dedicated to advancing contemporary classical music and fostering international exchange within the Asia-Pacific region. It brings together composers' organizations from various countries and territories, including Australia, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey and Vietnam.
The festival will feature a dynamic program, including six chamber music concerts highlighting piano, brass, strings, winds and guitar, electronic music, and percussion, alongside symphonic performances, showcases of commissioned works, and the Young Composers Award Competition.
With its strong emphasis on artistic exchange and contemporary music, the ACL Conference & Festival continues to provide a vital platform for composers in the region, celebrating innovation and collaboration in the field.
