Malaysia rejoins the Asian Composers League (ACL)

On 30 March 09 at the General Assembly of the Asian Composers League, an organisation of regional composers' associations, member countries of the League unanimously voted to approve the Malsaysian Composers Collective's membership application as Malaysia's representative country organisation.

The application was made after the ACL exco strongly encouraged Malaysia to submit its application during the 2007 ACL Festival in Wellington, following a presentation of the Malaysian new music scene at the time by MCC's representative, C H Loh. This comes after former vice president of ACL, Jack Body (photo, right), met with Loh in Singapore and invited him to make the presentation at the regional festival.

In Korea, the 2009 president of the ACL Dr Joshua Chan from Hong Kong welcomed Malaysia's return to the League, and remarked on the high quality of new compositions that were heard at the festival in Tongyeong, for example Ng Chong Liim's A Distant Voice of the Rain Forest.

As a member country of the ACL, Malaysia has the opportunity to send a representative to the next ACL festival's Young Composers Competition likely to be held in 2010.
